Ellie's Surgery

On March 19Th, Ellie, Will and I got up at 5:40am, ugh, to go to Sky Ridge Surgery Center. Ellie was very good and cooperated. She did not like the caps that she had to wear in surgery, so we all got one and wore them so she would wear hers. The gown she changed into was warm, which was such a nice touch.

Gotta love that pissed off look that she does so well!

The anesthesiologist put a flavored smell on the mask so Ellie could have something good to smell while she was going to sleep. She was very brave going into surgery. After surgery, she was livid. She was so mad and screaming and thrashing around. I was laughing my head off because she was saying everything I say when I am mad at her - Don't ever ever ever do that again, except she said "Don't ever ever ever take me here again" at the top volume she could yell in the middle of the PACU. Needless to say, they moved us into a private room with closed doors while Ellie was recovering. She was kicking at the nurses and really would not settle down until her IV was out of her foot. Finally she got tired and fell asleep in my arms, but she stopped breathing and dropped her oxygen saturation's too much, that Dr. Walker decided to admit her overnight on the Pediatric floor at Sky Ridge.

This was after we were admitted and Ellie was finally sleeping for a change.

She really did not like the hospital either, she just wanted to go home. When we finally were able to get her pain medicine and stay on top of her pain, she was back to my wonderful child again. She was very understanding that if she did not drink she would have to get an IV and she did not want that, so she drank some water.

She was doing well and really wanted to go home, so about 7 pm that day, after a bath, I had the nurse call Dr. Walker and ask if we could go home because Ellie had not dropped her sats while she was napping. He said no, so Ellie was not happy, but was okay with it when I said we would just have our own little sleep over. She threw up after her bath and was so upset because it was "so disgusting" and she was apologizing to her Elephant because she got it dirty. It was so sad and so cute. Finally, Daddy came and brought presents to make Ellie happy.

I had to wash the elephant in the hospital with baby soap, because she did not want to sleep without her.

The next morning we went home and Ellie is doing so great. Dr. Walker said he never likes to say anyone needs surgery, but Ellie needed this surgery. Her adenoids and tonsils were completely occluding her nasal passages and when he made the incision for her ear tubes, the junk behind her ears kept coming and coming, so Ellie really could not hear. So, now that we are through the hard part, I am so glad that she is feeling better and she is more rested because she sleeps all night long because she is not waking herself up snoring.

This makes me so sad! Little kids in the hospital is just a sad sad thing. I am glad to hear she will be doing better soon! What a little trooper. That picture where she is sleeping by you is so cute and she looks so much like you from the side!

When my daughter came out from anesthesia after her tonsillectomy she behaved the same way. I believe it is a reaction to the anesthesia. Her dad has his tonsils out the same day so they got to commiserate together. My daughter got so weak because she did not want to eat. We gave her pediasure and that perked her up.

I've only gone under anesthesia once and I hated it. Poor girl. I'm glad she'll be able to sleep better and hear better now. And I'm sure you're the best mom to have in a situation like that.
